“Female leads in horror movies never fall in love”
Ever since she was young, Yeo Ri has had the unnatural ability to see ghosts. Unexpected things start to occur around people that hang around her. Because of this she chose to isolate herself from the outside world until one day she receives the concern from a street magician named Jo Goo who offers her a job in his show. A year passes and Yeo Ri plays in his horror themed act as a ghost in a closet. At the end of each show Jo Goo invites the staff out for drinks – but she always rejects the offer, aware what will happen if she gets close to anyone. Jo Goo begins to show concern for her and as Yeo Ri begins to open up about her tragic and lonely life things begin to change for both of them. Can Jo-Goo help her find a way out? Or will he be chased away by the ghosts like all of the other people in Yeo-ri’s life?
Directed by Hwang In-ho, who had also directed “2 Faces of My Girlfriend” (2007) and “Love Phobia” (2006)
I watched this movie 2 nights ago and fell in love with it! I wrote a review on the site MyDramaList and I’m copying the review here for the blog.
Spoiler Code: Green
Ever since I heard that Lee Min Ki was in this movie, I wanted to watch it! I’ve recently heard about him [like others] from his short role in Shut Up Flower Boy Band. He left me impressed and dazzled, wanting to see more of his works. After watching the trailer for this movie, I knew I was going to like it.
Like others have stated, Spellbound is one of those movies that incorporates a lot of different genres. Horror and comedy? Can you really make a movie turn out good by using these two genres? This movie is proof of that. It had me laughing throughout more than half of it, but there were also those scenes that had me jumping from where I was sitting because I didn’t expect something to happen. If you’re someone who doesn’t like scary movies, you might find a couple of these scenes to be scary. But there’s also comedy that you wouldn’t find in a typical horror flick. And romance on top of it! I’m not a big fan of horror films, I get jumpy easily and if I watch one at night before I go to bed – I can guarantee it’ll take me hours to fall asleep unless I’m able to take my mind off of what I just saw. This movie is perfect for people who don’t handle scary movies that well – because it leaves you not with a feeling of being scared but a feeling of calmness after it’s all said and done.
The acting is great! I mentioned already that I briefly saw Lee Min Ki in Shut Up Flower Boy Band and loved him here. He’s a really good actor, he has this certain charm about him – I feel he can pull off any look or character and still do well.
I haven’t seen Son Ye Jin in anything, so I have nothing to compare it to. I feel she held her role here nicely. They both shared chemistry and the acting was done naturally.
The music didn’t really stand out too much to me in this movie. There was one song I briefly remember that had a nice sound, but nothing I’d listen to outside of the movie.
I can definitely see myself watching this movie again. I loved it. It wasn’t perfect, but it was done really well.
Overall, I think this movie is worth watching. If you’re looking for something with comedy and romance with a dash of horror – you got it. No really, it’s worth watching, it might seem odd, weird, but once you start watching you get pulled in. Give it a try (: There’s some really funny scenes!
There’s not much else I have to add, I recommend this movie to anyone!
I would give this movie 9 stars out of 10!
