KAT-TUN Highlighted

It’s only been three weeks since we started our blog. Every week there is a highlight, and what a good way to end the year with a special kind of highlight. I have been listening to them recently, and getting to know them more than just that pop singer in that drama… they are as talented as they have broken records, they are KAT-TUN.

KAT-TUN is one of the most famous –if not the ONE- pop band in Japan. Having set number one record on the Oricon charts for all singles released after their 2006 debut, and being the only band to perform eleven shows in one day; they stand at the very top in Japanese pop music groups.

KAT-TUN first started as a temporary dancing unit in support of Koichi Domoto’s music program, Pop Jam. Because they gained so much attraction, they soon became their own unit with six members. Kamenashi Kazuya, Akanishi Jin, Junnosuke Taguchi, Koki Tanaka, Tasuya Ueda, and Yuichi Nakamaru. Their name stands for the first letters of each member’s family name, although since the departure of Akanishi Jin in 2010, it currently stands for: Kamenashi, Taguchi, Tanaka, Ueda, and Nakamaru.

Before their debut, the group held their first concert in 2002. The following years, they had gained so much popularity, they were performing in music stations, and in 2005 they had already released their first music DVD (KAT-TUN Live: Pirate Sails) reaching number one on the Oricon chart for best-selling DVD that year, and placing on the list of Music Video Of The Year on the Japan Gold Disc Awards.

The band debuted with their single “Real Face”, in March 22 of 2006. They were labeled as the first band to held their own concerts at the Tokyo Dome stadium before debut; and the first pop group to have exceeded 500,000 in yearly sales for all three singles since their debut. In 2009, they also broke records by holding a concert of eight consecutive days at Tokyo Dome, placing them as the only artist group to ever do this.

After the departure of Akanishi Jin in 2010, the group continues to be of five members, and on the last day of their World Big Tour concert, they announced they would be holding another big tour for their fifth anniversary. The concert was held in five cities of Japan, and expanded to five countries: Korea, Thailand, China, Hawaii, and Taiwan. Their concert in Hawaii placed them as the first Johnny’s group to ever hold a concert in that country.

In 2011, after their tour, KAT-TUN participated in many fundraiser projects by Johnny Company, titled Marching J. The tickets were donated for the victims of the Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami.

Since their debut in 2006, KAT-TUN has released a total of 5 studio albums, 5 music DVDs, and 17 singles. Two photobooks have been released: KAT-TUN 1ST in New York, in December of 2003, and KAT-TUN Live Document Photobook: Break the Records, in 2009.
